China-Sweden: Network grant 2016
Renewable energy resources, especially wind energy, have become a significant part of the generation system in the majority of the electrical power systems. The wind turbines which are usually power-electronic interfaced, do not respond with inertia support during a disturbance. The lack of system inertia may lead to frequency instability or even blackout in a power system when subject to a significant disturbance. Inertia is a key property of a power system as it heavily influences the behaviour of frequency. The main aim of the project is to collect, sort and analyze synchronous generator and wind turbine data to evaluate the current system inertia level and the potential inertia support from wind turbines in the Chinese power system. Another aim is to evaluate the system-wide inertia support potentials from the wind turbines connected to the Swedish power system, accounting for electrical, mechanical and aerodynamic limiting factors. Based on the inertia estimation supported by wind turbines, a virtual inertia control for wind turbines considering inertia limit will be presented in this project.
