The passenger cars of today use mainly petrol or diesel for propulsion. This leads to well known disadvantages, such as CO2-emissions, contribution to the global warming as well as a dependency of the limited oil reserve. By using electric vehicles or hybrid electric vehicles, the dependency of fossil fuels and their negative consequences of the environment could be substantially reduced.
In the engine room of a vehicle which has a combustion engine the temperatures are substantially higher than 50°C, cooling fluids having even higher temperatures, and of course components such a power electronic converters must be able to handle these high temperatures. Apart from the high temperatures, there are other environmental aspects to consider in the vehicle, like low temperature, vibrations, dirt and humidity. This means a need for new power electronic converters that can withstand those conditions.
The main objectives of this project are to consider the environmental aspects put on the power electronic converters placed in a hybrid electric vehicle, and to study converters fit for this application. In addition to the theoretical treatment, the work also includes design and production of a converter prototype that practical verifies important issues of the proposed improvements.
