Chuan Sheng Liu was born in 1938 and graduated from Tunghai University (BS 1960) and theUniversityofCalifornia,Berkeley(MA 1964, PhD 1968). From 1971 to 1974 dr Liu was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study,Princeton. Since 1975 he is professor of Physics at University of Maryland, where from 1979-80 he was Professor and Acting Director, Laboratory for Plasma and Fusion Energy Studies, from 1985-90 he was Chairman, Department of Physics and Astronomy, and 1993-94 Acting Chairman, Department of Physics.
In 1981 he directed the Fusion Theory Program at General Atomic Technologies,San Diegoand in 1983 he was appointed director of its Division of Theoretical Sciences and acted there until 1985 when dr Liu returned to theUniversityofMaryland.
Dr Liu is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and served on numerous committees of the Division of Plasma Physics, including Chairman of the Division in 1993.
Dr Liu is active in promoting international exchanges and cooperation is plasma and fusion sciences. His field of research is nonlinear and plasma theory where he authored and co-authored more than 160 journal publications. He was an invited speaker at the Nobel Symposium on Nonlinear Plasma Physics (Aspenäs, Göteborg 1976) and at the International Conference on Plasma Physics – Waves and Instabilities (Göteborg 1982).
He has greatly stimulated plasma physics research at Chalmers and in 1980 he drafted the exchange agreement between theUniversityofMarylandand Chalmers, which became the basis for substantial cooperations between the two universities. His outstanding talents as scientist and inspiring teacher have played a world wide role.
