Development of process integration methods and computer-based tools for identifying and assessing sustainability and resource efficiency pathways for the process industry.
According to the International Energy Agency the energy demand of the industrial sector is expected to moderately increase in the future. At the same time this sector will need to dramatically diminish its greenhouse gas emission if the 2-degree scenario shall be met. Besides advancements in the current process technologies, important measures are required in the future such as the substitution of fossil feedstock with green raw materials and increasing the energy efficiency of the processes, for instance by improving how resources and energy are managed at the process-system level. In this seminar I will give an overview of the activities that I have conducted together with my group at the div. of Heat and Power Technology and later at Energy Technology in these two areas, with focus on the collaboration with major companies belonging to the West Sweden Chemicals & Materials Cluster. In the light of the research implementation objectives, I will then give an overview of the methodologies and computer-based tools for process integration which development and application have been the common denominator of my five years as assistant professor at Chalmers.
