In this course you will learn how to do the impossible, to differentiate non-differentiable functions. This is accomplished by introducing distributions, which are a much larger class of objects than functions. Distributions include all bounded functions, all distributions are differentiable, the normal differentiation rules hold and for differentiable functions, the distributional derivative is the same as the usual one. Distributions also provide a generalisation of the Fourier transform. The theory of distributions is of fundamental importance for modern analysis, especially in the theory of differential equations.
