Dependable adaptation to communication delays in computer networks

Speaker: António Casimiro, Informática - Universidade de Lisboa.
Abstract: Distributed protocols executing in open environments, like the Internet, have to face uncertain communication delays that might affect their operation. Dealing with this uncertainty is particularly important for performance and dependability reasons. In practice, one possible approach is to adapt some protocol or application parameters according to observed communication latencies, aiming to secure some Quality of Service (QoS) or dependability attribute.

There exist several approaches for adaptation, particularly in the context of QoS aware systems and architectures, which are typically best-effort when adapting system parameters to achieve the desired QoS. However, our focus is on dependable adaption, which requires the adaptation process to be performed in an informed and justified way, adapting parameters exactly as needed.

In concrete, we describe the Adaptare framework, which is based on probabilistic methods for monitoring communication or execution latencies. We then provide two use case applications of dependable adaptation, namely an application to adaptive crash failure detection and an application to a randomized consensus protocol. We finally provide a comparison of the Adaptare approach for the adaptation of timeouts with the one that is used in the well-known TCP protocol.
