Overall goal To understand the objectives behind platform based development; how such objectives can be realized in industrial settings and to learn how new methods and tools can be used for this purpose.
Overall contents Scale benefits versus customization: platform strategies in industrial settings. Object oriented platform systems engineering: the configurable component (CC) concept. EF-M based design rationale modelling. CC-based platform development and variant configuration: platform preparation and execution - models, methods and IT-support. Technology platforms.
Organization Lectures on Object oriented platform systems engineering. A series of 6 seminars held by the participants based on the book "Advances in Product Family and Product Platform Design - Methods & Applications" by Timothy Simpson, Roger Jianxin Jiao, Zahed Siddique, and Katja Hölttä-Otto (eds) + selected research papers. Platform development and modelling project assignment.
Knowledge prerequisites Basics in Systems Engineering, Design Theory & Methodology and CAD.
Examination Based on: Seminar presentations and related written summaries. Project presentation and written project report.
