Scope

Chalmers Soft Matter Graduate School is organizing a winter school on the topic of neutron scattering research on soft matter. The aim of the school is to bring together PhD students working on different issues related to soft matter with instrument scientists and neutron experts using and developing modern neutron methods. The school is of particular interest in view of the unique possibilities to materials research that will be offered by the next-generation neutron facility, the ESS, which is to be constructed in Lund, Sweden, over the next ~5-10 years.

Venue

The school will be held in Björkliden Fjällby, which, situated 250 km north of the Arctic Circle, is just about as exotic as it gets. Nestled between the mighty mountains of the last European wilderness, Björkliden is surrounded by breathtaking views of Lappland and Lake Torneträsk. Accommodation will be in the Kåppas Cabin Village.

Examination

The students are expected to work actively during the course: they will be given group assignments (proposal writing) and each student will be given the possibility to give a short presentation of his/her research. We recommend that students after completing the course will be given 4.5 ECTS.

Cost

The school is free of charge for Swedish PhD students. For students coming from abroad, a registration fee of 400 EUR applies. The registration fee covers accommodation, full board, banquet, and an extraordinary excursion.

Registration and number of participants

Applications may be sent to the organizers before December 15, 2011. Note that the total number of participants is limited to 30 students and there is a priority to those students enrolled in the Soft Matter Graduate School; other students are accepted on first come first serve basis. Furthermore, out of the total number of 30 places, we have, within the Röntgen-Ångström framework, reserved 10 places for students from Germany.

Transportation

The students will have to arrange their own travel to Björkliden, which is most easily reached by (1) direct train from Stockholm to Björkliden, or (2) by plane from Stockholm (Arlanda airport) to Kiruna airport, followed by bus to Björkliden. A timetable for the bus going from Kiruna airport to Björkliden will be posted on this web page in due time.
