Alex Alvarado received the degree of Ingeniero Civil Electrónico and his M.Sc. degree from Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María, Valparaíso, Chile in 2003 and 2005 respectively, under the supervision of Professor Rodolfo Feick.

During and after obtaining his degrees, he has been a visitor researcher at Institut National de la Recherche Scientifique, Montreal, QC, Canada, hosted by Professor Leszek Szczecinski.

Since May 2007 he is pursuing his PhD at the Department of Signals and Systems, Communication Systems Group, Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden, under the supervision of Professor Arne Svensson and Professor Erik Agrell. In 2008 he obtained the degree of Licentiate of Engineering (Teknologie Licentiatexamen).

His research interests are in the areas of digital communications, coding, and information theory.

He teaches the course SSY121 Introduction to Communication Engineering, part of the MPCOM program, and he was a guest lecturer in the PhD course SSY195 Error Control coding.
