Assistant Professor in automatic control

Reference number 2010/48
Application deadline 2010-04-19

The Department of Signals and System are looking for an assistant professor in automatic control

At the Department of Signals and Systems, we conduct world leading research in biomedical engineering, antennas and signal processing, control, automation and mechatronics, and communication systems.

The activities in automatic control are centred on the fundamental concepts of dynamic systems and feedback. Properties of dynamic systems models are of interest to understand phenomena in the technical apparatus or the industrial processes which they describe. To operate the system in a more favourable way often means incorporating feedback based on optimization and other principles. Our research is quite often application driven, currently towards e.g. automotive and process control, but we stress that it should encompass important aspects on methodology. However, the announced position is not tied to any specific topic within automatic control.

Job description

The position as assistant professor is a full-time position, preparing for future research assignments in academia or elsewhere. Assistant professors are expected to attain the docent level during the latter part of the four-year position. The employment consists of two two-year contracts. After the first two years, a performance evaluation is carried out.

As assistant professor, you are expected to be involved in PhD student advising, and in supervision of MSc thesis workers. You are also expected to be active in your own research and to prepare applications for new projects, as well as to promote the continuation of ongoing projects. Lecturing at the bachelors and/or masters levels is also included in the position, although normally not more than about 20% of total working time is devoted to undergraduate teaching.

Chalmers University of Technology offers an attractive working environment which is distinguished by a strive to give equal rights for everybody.

Required qualifications

To be qualified, the applicant must have a PhD degree in automatic control, normally obtained during the last five years, and documented pedagogical experience in this field. Experience from research within academia or qualified research and development within industry is valued.

The undergraduates are normally taught in Swedish; however the graduate level teaching is in English. Good English language skills are required.

Application procedure

The application shall be written in English and include the following items:

  1. A first page containing name, reference number 2010/48 and a list of all documents that have been enclosed
  2. Description of the applicant's research and pedagogical qualifications, as well as other qualifications
  3. Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  4. Complete list of publications
  5. Plans for future work within the area of the announced position, both scientific and educational, if appointed
  6. Two reference persons who can be contacted by Chalmers (describe association with them and give their contact addresses)
  7. Copies of the applicant's best scientific publications (not more than 5)
  8. Copies of a maximum of 5 other publications (such as pedagogy, and popular science) in support of pedagogical and other merits

Please consult the two documents, Information for applicants for a teaching post at Chalmers and Qualifications: How they are presented, documented and assessed.

The application shall be sent electronically. Please use the button at the foot of the page to reach the application form.

The documents according to items 1-8 above shall be attached as two pdf-files.

  • One should contain items 1-6 in the listing of material to be included in the application
  • The other should contain items 7 and 8 in the listing of material, and any other appendices

The files may be compressed (zipped).

If any part of the material is not available as, or easily transferred to, pdf format it, may be sent separately to the registrar. Such documents must be marked with the applicant's name and reference number 2010/48. They shall be prepared in three identical packages, which can be forwarded to the assessors without repacking them.
