Tommy Svensson is Associate Professor in the Communication Systems group. He is a teacher in communication systems and performs research in mobile wireless systems.

He currently works with the 4th Generation (4G) mobile wireless systems, and have actively contributed to the Wireless World Initiative New Radio (WINNER)  within EU FP6 (WINNER phase 1 and 2) and within EUREKA CELTIC (WINNER+), and through the collaboration established within the Swedish SFF project Wireless IP. He is also leading the collaboration project IMT-Advanced Mobility with Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT) within the VINNOVA funded collaboration programme "IMT Advanced and Beyond", as well has Chalmers participation within the EU FP7 project "Advanced radio interface technologies for 4G systems" (ARTIST4G). The goal of the research is to create a flexible and efficient radio access network, that can fulfill the requirements on the future Mobile Internet in all envisioned deployment and usage scenarios. The network will carry all kind of multimedia traffic. The mobile backhaul network also needs to be improved to support 4G. In this area he is leading the project "Microwave backhauling for IMT advanced and beyond" (MAGIC).

Tommy's main research interests are design and analysis of algorithms for the physical layer (channel coding, modulation and detection), medium access in the access network and microwave backhauling networks for next generation mobile systems, as well as distributed multi-antenna systems, but he also has industrial experience in development of core network nodes.

Tommy is lecturing in the Master Program  Communication Engineering. He is a senior member of IEEE and Chairman of the Swedish IEEE VT/COM/IT board.
