A Vision for Scientific Data e-InfrastructuresThe High-Level Group on Scientific Data have presented a report, "Riding the Wave: How Europe can gain from the rising tide of scientific data", to the European Commission. The report highlights the opportunities and challenges associated with the growth of large-scale data. Recommendations include expanded funding for collaborative data infrastructures, and the development of advanced-degree programmes for the emerging field of data scientist. Computational Frontiers in Scientific DiscoveryA meeting on "Computational Frontiers in Scientific Discovery" takes place at the Royal Society, London, on 4 November 2010. This meeting brings together "leading scientists at the forefront of their disciplines, ranging from astrophysics and climate prediction, to genome biology and human variation. This meeting will explore the similarities and differences between the computational approaches across different disciplines and highlight potential synergies, whereby one discipline can borrow from another to speed up the process of discovery." Data Integration in the Life SciencesChalmers University of Technology hosted the 7th International Conference on Data Integration in the Life Sciences (DILS 2010) in August 2010. Conference highlights included keynote presentations from Juliana Freire (University of Utah) on "Provenance Management for Data Exploration" and Joel Saltz (Emory University) on "High-performance Systems for In Silico Microscopy Imaging Studies".
