Multiwavelength studies of young pulsar-powered supernova remnants

Natalia Lundqvist will hold a seminar entitled "Multiwavelength studies of young pulsar-powered supernova remnants".

Abstract

Natalia will summarize the main properties of young pulsar-powered supernova remnants, and discuss in detail two of them, namely 3C 58 and SNR 0540-69.3. Both remnants are classified as Crab-like supernova remnants, but as Natalia will discuss, "Crab-like" may be misleading. 3C 58 is located in our galaxy and was only recently identified in the optical and near infrared. It is actually only the third pulsar-wind nebula to be seen in the optical.

SNR 0540-69.3 is located in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), and in contrast to for the Crab and 3C 58, an outer shell produced by interaction of the forward shock with interstellar gas has been observed. While the Crab pulsar wind shows variation, the pulsar wind nebula of PSR B0540-69.3 is very dynamical even on large scales, which makes it unique and interesting to study. She will discuss new features revealed by detailed optical and X-ray studies.
