Design of an ergonomic control lever for wheel loader devices

Wheel loaders are working machines used in e.g. load and carry operations, construction work, timber yards and snow plowing. The master thesis’ purpose was to design an ergonomically optimized single lever concept that will be used to maneuver the machine. The thesis consists of an investigation of the work environment of wheel loader operators where both physical and cognitive ergonomic analyses were performed resulting in needs and guidelines used when developing the concept. Several iterations were made during the concept development phase using sketches, physical mock-ups and finally a functional prototype that were tested in a real wheel loader. The final result is a single lever concept adapted for wheel loader usage that solves the main identified economical issues and meets the market's demands.
