Advanced characterization of receivers for use in mobile communication systems

b.jpg

The signals of future mobile communications systems need to use higher order modulation schemes to enable increased data throughput. This put new demands on the receivers in terms of noise figure and linearity. Furthermore, there is an increasing interest in using multiband systems, with several consecutive carriers. It might therefore not be possible to protect the receiver with filters, and hence other carriers act as interferers. It is therefore needed to characterize the performance of receivers when used in multi standard communication systems to understand what the limitations are.

The work consists of a literature study, to learn the art of noise figure and linearity measurements. Thereafter, a new measurement setup needs to be built in out well-equipped measurement lab, and this setup will be used to measure on available receivers.
This thesis is carried out within the GigaHerz centre and the student will therefore present the results on meetings together with our industrial partners. This gives to student good opportunities to meet engineers and researchers from world leading companies within the microwave industry.
