Class of 2011

DENNA SIDANS MOTSVARIGHET PÅ SVENSKA

This two-year masters programme in mathematical sciences was started in 2007, and is one of the masters programmes at the Faculty of Natural Science at Göteborg University.

Mathematics and mathematical statistics are increasingly important tools. Many scientific areas such as for example biology and medicine, economics and finance, and social sciences, are sharply increasing their use of mathematics and statistics, and are also using new tools in innovative ways. Areas ranging from physics to technological innovation require new theory and new models. At the same time, theoretical progress is rapid in a number of areas, sometimes aided by the advances in computing.

This program aims to provide a good background for students who would like to work in a wide range of applied fields, in research and development. It also aims to provide a good foundation for students who later want to do academic research in areas of mathematics or statistics, in a PhD programme. The flexibility is possible as the Mathematical Sciences institution is large, joint between Chalmers University and Göteborg University, with a number of varied research groups and research activities.

The programme has five specialisations: Mathematics, applied mathematics, financial mathematics, mathematical statistics, and biostatistics. The two first lead to a master of science degree in mathematics, the two last to a master of science degree in mathematical statistics, whereas the financial mathematics specialisation can lead to either, depending on the type of thesis chosen.

Further information about the specialisations and the contents of the programme can be found here. The educational plan, and the definition of the masters degree in mathematics and mathematical statistics are available only in Swedish.

Entrance requirements

A bachelor degree (kandidatexamen) consisting of 180 higher education credits, containing at least 75 higher education credits in mathematics and mathematical statistics. For students whose education is not from Swedish universities, an individual assessment will be made of whether their education corresponds to the requirements specified above. To aid in this assessment, students are strongly encouraged to submit with their application course descriptions of their courses in mathematics and statistics.

Students who have not completed the requirements above at the time of application, but plan to do so before the start of the master program, may also apply. Such students should submit transcripts for courses completed by the end of 2008, and a list of planned courses for the coming half year, together with a letter from a teacher of the student stating that the teacher would expect the student to pass the exams of the listed courses before the start of the master program. If accepted to the program, the student is required to prove completion of all entrance requirements before getting the master degree.

There is also a requirement to prove proficiency in English, at what is called "level B" in the Swedish educational system. This corresponds to (from 2011) an IELTS score of 6.5 (with no part under 5.5), or a TOEFL score of 575 together with a TWE score or 4.5.

Starting 2011, students from outside the EU/EEA area will be required to pay tuition. The yearly tuition fee will be SEK 130.000. There is no tuition for students from the EU/EEA area.

Selection criteria

The applyings students fulfilling the entrance requirements compete for a limited number of places in the program. The selection of students is based on grades in university-level courses. Recommendation letters, or letters from the student, will not be considered in the selection.

Application procedure

All students should apply via the central Swedish application system studera.nu, which should be ready to accept applications from 1. December. The deadline for applications from EU/EEA students is 15. April, while the deadline for other students is 15. January. The admission of students will be based on the material submitted to studera.nu, no additional documents should be sent to our institution.

NOTE: When applying at studera.nu, you should first and foremost apply to the master program. In connection with the application, or after you have been admitted, you will be asked to make a selection of courses for the first quarter. Concerning course selection, see the webpages for each specialisation.
