The Gothenburg Atmospheric Science Centre is a centre for activities in atmospheric science in the Gothenburg region. The objective of the centre is to coordinate and strengthen the existing atmospheric research resources and activities in the region. The ambition of GAC is to develop the centre into an important national- as well as international research organisation.

Background

Seen from a broad environmental perspective, Gothenburg with its many strong research groups and individuals as well as research institutes and other partners has a great potential to develop an internationally strong atmospheric research centre. The Gothenburg Atmospheric Science Centre was formed in 2004 to coordinate and strengthen the existing resources and activities in the region. The ambition of GAC is to develop the centre into an important research organisation nationally as well as internationally.

Atmospheric science has a trans-disciplinary character and covers a broad range from detailed studies on atmospheric processes to the impact on the environment and human health, including social, economical and cultural aspects. Examples of areas of interest are ongoing climate change, depletion of the ozone layer, air quality and health and environmental effects caused by air pollutions. To reach a sustainable development the need to continue both basic and applied research is very large.

Objectives and assignments

The main objective of GAC is to promote atmospheric science in the Gothenburg region.

The tasks include to:
• organize scientists and PhD students in atmospheric science in a network,
• arrange seminars and workshops in atmospheric science,
• promote cooperation and trans-disciplinary contacts,
• initialize and coordinate research programs,
• create a long-term vision for the scientific activities in Göteborg,
• develop contacts with society, industries and financial supporters, and to act as a body to which a proposed measures is referred for consideration,
• establish GAC as a significant platform to promote the scientific activities of the members in Sweden and internationally.
