Department of Fundamental Physics The Elementary Particle Physics Group announces a position as Associate Professor of Physics, in the field of theoretical elementary particle physics.
Reference number
2009/195
Application deadline
2010-02-28
The main desire of the department is to find a creative person with a strong research potential, who will be a driving force in strengthening and developing the department, both scientifically and pedagogically. The research groups in theoretical elementary particle physics and mathematical physics together comprise seven senior faculty members. Their research activity is concerned with formal high energy theory, mainly in the fields of superstring theory/M-theory and supersymmetric field theories. There is a strong wish to broaden the research in superstring theory/M-theory e.g. in the direction of more phenomenological elementary particle physics, astroparticle physics, or cosmology. Also candidates with interests in other aspects of fundamental physics in general, e.g. more theoretical aspects of quantum theory or mathematical physics, are very welcome to apply and will be taken into serious consideration.
Job description
The post is a permanent appointment which includes teaching at all levels, from undergraduate to postgraduate. It also includes supervision of PhD students and conducting research. Administrative and management duties are also normally included. The applicant should be capable of successfully applying for external grants for the research. The research and the PhD students are financed primarily by external grants.
Required qualifications
To be qualified, the applicant must have a PhD degree in a relevant field and documented pedagogical experience. There is a formal requirement of a course in pedagogy for higher education which however can be supplemented after being appointed. English is our working language for research. Both Swedish and English are used in undergraduate courses, while graduate courses are taught in English. The applicant is recommended to learn Swedish within a few years. To be appointed Associate Professor, the applicant must be qualified for the Swedish docent level (in Swedish "oavlönad docent"). If the applicant has not yet reached that qualification level, the position is designated Senior Lecturer, in which case the applicant is expected to qualify as "oavlönad docent" within a few years and then promoted to Associate Professor. A good teaching skill at both undergraduate and graduate level is necessary as well as an ability to supervise graduate students. Good social competence and talent to create a stimulating teaching and research environment for both women and men is of great importance.
Application procedure
The application shall be written in English and include the following items:
Please consult the two documents, Information for applicants for a teaching post at Chalmers and Qualifications: How they are presented, documented and assessed. The application shall be sent electronically. Please use the button at the foot of the page to reach the application form. The documents according to items 1-8 above shall be attached as two pdf-files.
The files may be compressed (zipped). If any part of the material is not available as, or easily transferred to, pdf format, it may be sent separately to the registrar. Such documents must be marked with the applicant's name and reference number 2009/195. They shall be prepared in four identical packages, which can be forwarded to the assessors without repacking them. Address:
