Eskil Varenius is a senior research engineer in the group Space geodesy and geodynamics. He uses very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) techniques to relate positions on Earth to far-away galaxies. VLBI observations are used to study geodynamical processes such as plate tectonics, Earth rotation, and land uplift, but also to obtain sharp images of astronomical objects such as galaxies, supernovae and black holes. In addition to a fundamental understanding of space, Earth and the environment, VLBI results are used in other research areas which affect society, such as climate modeling and navigation.
