Mathias Janssen

Senior researcher (docent)

Matty Janssen's research addresses life cycle assessment (LCA) during technology development, specifically its application to assess technology that is in its early stages of development. LCA can thus inform technology developers to achieve an environmentally benign design of a technology. His research focuses on method develpment forsuch assessments. Application areas have been biorefinery processes and products (biofuels, bio-based chemicals and bio-based materials), and Li-ion batteries (e.g. second use, material recycling).
Furthermore, he is examiner of the Environmental Systems Analysis (VMI010) and Life Cycle Assessment (VTM081) courses at Chalmers.
Environmental Systems Analysis (VMI010).
The aim of the course is to give knowledge regarding number of environmental systems analysis tools such as Environmental Risk Assessment, Life Cycle Assessment, Environmental Impact Assessment, and Materials Flow Analysis. The course also aims at understanding of the relationship between different environmental systems analysis tools.

Life Cycle Assessment (VTM081).
The course aims at providing an understanding of methods to assess the environmental impact of products in a life cycle perspective. The course gives the theoretical background for Life Cycle Assessment as a method, skills to use the method and knowledge about its application areas and limitations.

Sustainability in Everyday Life (MOOC).
The learning outcomes of the SiEL MOOC aim at developing the participant’s capacity to appreciate the complexity of sustainable everyday life by developing skills such as systems thinking and critical reflection on the information flow in public media. Furthermore, the course aims at giving the participants a sense of empowerment that enables them to move towards a more sustainable way of living (citizen stewardship).
