Chemistry and Bioscience

The rationale behind the programme is the increasing focus at the molecular level to further scientific and industrial development and the need for molecular experts to pursue this development. Chemistry is the molecular science that tries to understand the properties of and changes in matter from the molecular perspective. Its applications range from designing and constructing new functional materials to understanding the complex processes of life. Nationally and internationally, chemistry is acknowledged as a key factor in social and economic progress.

A thorough understanding on a molecular level will enable the engineer to link chemistry with biology (as in medicinal chemistry and molecular biology), physics (nanomaterials and molecular electronics), technology (“green” chemistry and sustainable processes) and environmental sciences (analytical and nuclear chemistry).

Programme

The programme has a broad nature and the participants will acquire extensive knowledge in:

  • Analytical sciences (analytical chemistry, spectroscopy, microscopy and image analysis, nuclear chemistry)
  • Molecular design and synthesis (synthetic organic and inorganic chemistry, solid state chemistry, homogenous catalysis, natural product chemistry, applied quantum chemistry)
  • Biomolecular structure and function (biophysical chemistry, structural biochemistry, molecular biology)
  • Nanomaterial chemistry (solid state chemistry, molecular electronics, bioanalytical chemistry, DNA and membrane technologies)
