What do we do with our money in the Excellence Initiative Nano?

Excellence Initiative Nano (EI Nano) supports research activities in nanoscience at Chalmers through several funding instruments. The only criterion besides relevance of the activities within EI Nano is scientific excellence. All funding decisions are handled and discussed by the steering group and final decisions are taken by the director.

We fund open Excellence PhD positions currently supporting about 10 PhDs across four departments. We also support post-doc positions jointly with the departments of Chemistry, Physics, MC2 and Bio. Here a proactive strategic discussion between EI Nano and the department heads leads to a joint decision on funding. Short term projects are supported by up to 750 kSEK/year and this funding should be regarded as seeds to try out new research directions. The short term projects are evaluated by 4 internal experts to help the steering group to rank the proposals.

In “Valued activities”  and “Undergraduate activities” various types of smaller funding could be asked for to partially cover salary of our Nano faculty. For these instruments, the application procedure is very simple – just write a short motivation and send to the director/co-director. From 2020 we have an "international exchange program" aimed at both supporting sabbaticals for the Nano faculty as well as a visiting professor program. Please send us an inquiry if you are interested in applying for this funding instrument. Finally, we support two assistant professors with start-up packages and infrastructure at Chalmers (the clean room).

The research funding activities described above covers in 2020 more than 90 % of the budget.
