Principles in fluorescence spectroscopy

The course deals with a general description of fluorescence and applications to it in chemical, physical, biochemical and medicinal contexts. Areas covered: General introduction to ground and excited states of molecules, instrumentation, fluorophores, excited state lifetimes, solvent effects, quenching, fluorescence anisotropy, energy transfer (FRET), multiphoton excitation, microscopy, single molecule detection, fluorescence correlation spectroscopy etc.
1) Written exam
2) Actively taking part in two instrument demonstrations (Steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence instrumentation)

Biophysical Chemistry (KFK021, FKBT160) or Applied Optical Spectroscopy (KFK150, FKBT165) or similar course at other Universities. The student should also in their course application write a project description about how they could use fluorescence in their main research project.
