The role of logistics in efficient construction processes: consequences for costs, quality, and sustainability

Start date 01/05/2015
End date The project is closed: 31/12/2015
Well-functioning logistics is crucial for the efficiency of the construction industry with regard to cost, quality, and sustainability: The costs for logistics and transportation make up for a considerable part of the total cost for a construction project. Early planning of logistics might lead to positive effects for quality in terms of more efficient deliveries, reduced waste and damages. Efficient logistics is important for sustainable construction with regard to the demands set by society on reduced transport work.

The overarching goal of the project is to illustrate the role of logistics in efficient construction processes. Within the scope of this, a number of sub-goals are defined: (1) Illustrate how well-planned and organised logistics solutions can contribute to efficient construction processes. (2) Increase the understanding of the strategic role of logistics in the construction industry. (3) Show how deepened collaboration contributes to the realization of potential possibilities and consequences of various forms of collaboration. (4) Illustrate direct and indirect costs of logistics and how these can be reduced. (5) Show how technological solutions create conditions for efficient construction processes.
