From Waste to Resources – A Design Perspective on Closing the Resource Loops

Several studies to improve Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) handling through design and participation aim to change the current waste handling system to closed-loop resource management. This research effort is designed to help facilitate the dialog between different relevant stakeholders to set common goals for the improvement of the MSW system. In parallel, the possibility of proposing new product development with materials from the waste streams is investigated in an explorative manner. Through demonstration of interesting new design- and business opportunities, best cases are utilized at the same time for setting examples of resource recovery. To help simplify the communication onhow the MSW system works, reliable waste data collected will be visualized. As a base for further work, comprehensive systemic diagrammes will contribute to bridge the current system with the ideal closed-loop.
