Fiber Optic Parametric Amplifiers and their Applications
This project deals with optical amplifiers that can provide amplification of light over large optical bandwidths and also have a noise figure well below the conventional 3-dB quantum limit when operated in phase-sensitive mode. We will leverage our world-leading expertise on optical fiber based parametric amplifiers and their applications to design and build phase-sensitive optical amplifiers that will have unique characteristics and potential applications. We will investigate applications enabled by such performance including widely tunable lasers and optical phase regeneration. In addition, we target a demonstration of a practical approach to implement a phase-sensitive amplifier with a noise figure under 1 dB. We approach our objectives both theoretically with existing modeling tools, and experimentally with existing hardware and we will collaborate with some of the best groups in the world in this area, most notably UC San Diego in the US. While we will work at wavelength around 1500 nm, our solutions are generic in the sense that the results can be scaled to other wavelengths as well, including the visible range with its specific applications such as spectroscopy or illumination.
