Energy AND Power: Hybrid Supercapacitors

Batteries currently dominate the hybridisation of vehicles, but there is a struggle to provide both the best possible energy and power performance. This affects usage pattern and the reduction in fuel consumption possible, as well as the charging rates possible, affecting also life-length and ageing. The more recent “hybrid supercapacitor” concept, “hybrid” here meaning battery and supercapacitor technology combined, has the potential to fill this void in the energy and power demand chart. “The battery part”, must be more stable than usual, to provide > 100.000 cycles, and at the same time “the supercapacitor part” focussing on energy content, to not sub-optimise the device. All aspects are tackled in a project based on smart nano-materials created, tested and designed, to enable a functional cell. The team will consist of 3 PhD students in 3 different groups with 4 principal investigators (PIs) having complementary unique expertises in the field of batteries and supercapacitors.
