Electric Worksite II

In the Project Electric Worksite II, several big players take concrete steps to electrify construction sites. With a focus on, among other things, construction projects and street maintenance, electricity- powered work machines will be tested for their ability to work in real environments in Gothenburg. Electrification in the sector is a central part of the conversion required to achieve important environmental and climate goals.

The construction and civil engineering sector in Sweden has agreed on a common roadmap with the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 50% to 2030 and reach carbon neutrality in 2045. The use of electrical work machines on construction sites, especially for energy-intensive groundworks of different kinds, is an important step for achieving these goals as well as reducing harmful air and noise emissions.

In the Electric Worksite II project, 13 different players collaborate to show how electrified work machines, such as wheel loaders and wheeled excavators of different sizes can be integrated into smaller and larger construction projects and management operations such as street maintenance and snow removal.

The project has a clear focus on the system perspective where work machines, energy storage and charging infrastructure are tested in different environments to clarify the need for changes in technical and organizational circulation systems. Focus is also placed on building knowledge and models and developing a methodology intended for use in a future system demonstration of a fully electrified construction site in Gothenburg.

The first tests start in August 2021. During the project period (two years), a number of both existing and upcoming machines will be tested in a number of different urban environments.
