This project concerns the treatment of cancer in the head-and-neck region, using external radiation by means of intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT). It is a challenging task for many reasons, including the fact that different patients react differently to the same radiation, and that the regions of interest to radiate may lie very closely to sensitive tissue. The project concerned the formulation and solution of robust mathematical optimization models and methods that can take variations in patient sensitivity into account, as well as to errors in the delivery of the machines, utilizing robust mathematical models and methods.
