In order to reduce fuel consumption the current trend is towards engines with decreased displacement and high specific power which increases the thermal load on the material. This increases the need of methods to design the base engine with respect to thermo mechanical fatigue, (TMF). In order to build a better understanding of which methods are suitable for use in the specific case fatigue of cylinder heads a project to develop evaluation methods and select and calibrate constitutive models for the aluminum alloy used in today's cylinder heads is proposed. This is done by material testing, where basic material data at room and elevated temperatures and more model-specific parameters are developed. The thermo-mechanical behavior of the material is then investigated in a test cycle that mimics the loading cycle that the material in the critical areas of the cylinder head undergoes in today's engine testing. Finally the selected models are verified against results from engine testing.
