As an international institution, Chalmers attracts students and researchers from different parts of the world. Some of them come from countries with a large Muslim population and therefore there are Muslims who practice their religion on a regular basis at the university.
At Chalmers, there is a Muslim student organisation under the Student Union, namely Chalmers Islamiska Förening (CIF). Most of CIF members are international students at Chalmers. CIF organises a number of activities for its members such as Ramadhan dinner, Islamic lectures, Friday prayer and sport activities. There is also a Muslim prayer room in the Student Union building which is used and taken care of by CIF.
CIF arranges weekly Friday prayer congregations at the university. Friday prayer itself is one of the compulsory prayers that must be performed by Muslim men. The event is usually arranged in the sport hall of the Student Union building every Friday between 12.00-13.00 o’clock during winter time and 13.00-14.00 o’clock during summer time. Similar to the standard practice, the Friday prayer at Chalmers consists of two parts: Friday sermon and the prayer itself. The sermon is usually given by a student based on voluntary basis. The duration of the sermon is approximately 15-20 minutes while the prayer is about 10 minutes.
The event is usually well-attended by Muslim people with approximately 50 attendants. The Muslim people who come to the Friday congregation are mainly Chalmers students and employees. Some of them also come from the Sahlgrenska University Hospital, in Gothenburg or from offices around Chalmers.
