Academic credits
The normal workload for one semester amounts to 30 higher education credits, compatible with ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System).
The academic year consists of 40 weeks of full-time studies corresponding to 60 higher education credits.
- 60 ECTS credits are equal to the workload of a full-time student over one academic year (i.e. two semesters of study over 40 weeks).
- 30 ECTS credits are equal to the workload of a full-time student over half an academic year (i.e. one semester of study over 20 weeks).
- One credit is the equivalent of approximately 25–30 hours of study.
Degrees awarded at Chalmers
The education system in Sweden is divided into three levels: first cycle (undergraduate/Bachelor's level), second cycle (postgraduate/Master's level) and third cycle (postgraduate/doctoral – PhD level). Chalmers University of Technology offers study programmes within these three cycles, which all lead to the internationally recognised degrees below. The language of instruction is found within parentheses. Chalmers issues two types of degrees - general and professional.
General degrees:
A general degree has requirements of a main field of study and the amount of progressive studies needed in that main field of study as well as an independent degree project.
First cycle degrees
- Higher Education Diploma (120 credits, Swedish)
- Bachelor of Science (180 credits, Swedish)
Second cycle degrees

Architecture/Arkitektexamen and Master of Science in
Engineering/Civilingenjör, 300 credits, are awarded to students
completing a five-year programme at Chalmers.
