English language requirement

The requirement is equivalent to (the Swedish upper secondary school) English course 6.
International students conventionally substantiate this knowledge by submitting acknowledged tests with a prescribed minimum test result.
There are three main ways to fulfill the English language requirement at Chalmers
  1. certain upper secondary (high school) studies,
  2. certain university studies,
  3. or an internationally approved English test (do not sent any tests directly to Chalmers).

1. Certain Upper secondary (high school) studies

Some applicants may be exempted from submitting an approved language test when the English proficiency from previous upper secondary (or high school) studies can be assessed as equivalent to English course 6. This applies to Degree/Diploma from either an international education such as AICE/IGCSE, EB, IB, or from a country listed at

universityadmissions.se

Nordic countries (including Sweden)
Applicants with completed upper secondary education and a Bachelor’s degree from a Nordic country, fulfill the English requirement provided the school leaving certificate (of the upper secondary education) is included in the application package.

2. Certain university studies

Applicants who have studied at the university level may meet the English requirement for the course or programme they've applied to. You will find a list of previous university studies that meet the criteria at

3. Internationally approved English test (do not sent any tests directly to Chalmers).

Applicants of Master's programmes and single subject courses may submit one of the approved tests. The most commonly used tests are IELTS and TOEFL. The minimum test scores correspond to the level of (Swedish Upper Secondary school) English course 6. The minimum scores are listed as "For English 6: ..." at universityadmissions.se and yoy will find the approved tests listed at

Note

  • Chalmers will not make exemptions to the minimum test score.
  • Neither Institutional TOEFL, nor the TOEIC-test is valid for academic purposes in Sweden.
  • All TOEFL tests must be sent directly from Educational Testing Service (ETS).
    • The institution code for University Admissions in Sweden is "Sweden 3477". You must provide this code in order for your results to be reported. When sending your score, you can choose any school type and department for University Admissions (but do not chose any other code but 3477).
    • It can take several weeks for your test scores to arrive from ETS, so arrange for them to be sent to University Admissions as early as possible if you already have test scores.
