Johanna Torres

Hej! My name is Johanna Torres Bonilla and I am from Ecuador’s capital city, Quito. This autumn I moved to Gothenburg to attend the Quality and Operations Management Master’s programme at Chalmers University of Technology.

We make choices and our choices make us

Since I decided to study abroad, finding a worldwide leading institution in higher education was my goal.  During my undergraduate studies in Industrial Engineering at San Francisco de Quito University, professors always mentioned the importance given to this field in Sweden. Having one of the best Research and Development (R&D) systems and owning world-class industries makes the country the best place for an industrial engineering student.

After extensive research and after analyzing pros and cons, I reduced my options to three Master’s programmes at three different universities. So, how come I chose Chalmers? The answer is simple: Chalmers chose me!

After I got admitted, Chalmers’ international office staff helped me in all possible ways to fulfill the requirements to come  here. The Next Stop Chalmers team sent me relevant information about key dates, incoming events, accommodation application, and details about moving to Sweden. Finally, Chalmers International Reception Committee (CIRC) assigned me to a “phadder” group where I’ve not only had the opportunity to experience Gothenburg and Swedish culture first hand, but also I’ve also met students from around the world. They make it difficult for me not to feel a Chalmerist already!

Getting to know Gothenburg

Before moving to Gothenburg I tried to read as many facts as I could about the city, the people and the culture. Anything was not even close to describe this wonderful city, between all the parks and gardens, caffés and small shops, theaters and museums that make you easily forget about the cold weather!

Third week… So far, so good!

Academic life is different compared to Ecuador. Chalmers’ campus facilities and tools for students are beyond my expectations. In the classroom, professors are open-minded and make the class interaction a key for developing new knowledge; assignments are based on a balance of teamwork and individual tasks; and guest lectures held by company representatives have given me an overall perspective about industry practices.

Outside the class, Chalmers manages to offer social activities and cultural events for every taste, making students feel part of the Chalmerist community.

Choosing Chalmers was a lifetime decision, but I am sure that I made the right choice!
