The GRACE project has received funding from the Clean Sky 2 Joint Undertaking under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 821270. The objective of GRACE is to develop surface mount W-band (93-100 GHz) radar components for Enhanced Flight Vison Systems (EFVSs) that permit take-off, landing and taxiing in poor visibility conditions, where landing would not be safe otherwise.
Millimetre-wave radar technology is expected to be a critical complement to infrared (IR) technology in future EFVS systems. In poor-visibility conditions (snow, rain, fog, and dust) radar technology has the potential to improve the Air Traffic Management (ATM) significantly with improved rates of on-time landing and taking off, increased safety, and eventually reduced CO2 gas emissions with as much as 10% resulting from the reduced number of unsuccessful landing attempts followed by a go-around.
The specific objectives of GRACE are to develop
