Dr. Patrick Pütz will give a presentation about Stratospheric Observatory For Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA). SOFIA is a 2.5 meter telescope on board of Boeing 747 operated by joint afford from DLR (Germany) and NASA (USA). Among other things, Dr. Pütz will introduce to the observatory and discuss his experience with waveguide technology up 5THz.
Dr. P. Pütz will report on hot electron bolometer mixer development for the 1.9 THz and 4.7 THz focal plane array extensions of the German Receiver for Astronomy at Terahertz frequencies (GREAT), the heterodyne receiver operated by a consortium of institutions on the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA). For (up)GREAT, waveguide technology has been pushed to 4.7 THz. He will describe the RF planar circuit design, the micro fabrication employing NbN microbridges on 2 μm thin Si membrane substrates and the fabrication technology used for the waveguides. The 14 pixel 1.9 THz and 7 pixel 4.7 THz arrays were succesfully commissioned in 2015 and 2016, respectively. Dr. P.Pütz will present performance results of the mixers, the receiver and some recent astronomical results from the 2016 commissioning run incl. observations of the 4.745 THz fine structure transition of atomic oxygen [OI], one of the main cooling lines of the interstellar medium.’
