The mission of the accident prevention group is to understand why crashes happen and how they can be prevented. This includes understanding crash causation mechanisms related to the road-user behavior as well as vehicle and environment factors. Strategies of risk exposure reduction in normal driving and threat avoidance in conflicts are used to prevent crashes. We leverage the deep understanding of these strategies to build effective driver coaching, active safety, and vehicle automation. We evaluate these strategies using conceptual and mathematical models developed with naturalistic and experimental data.
