In the Safe System group, the interaction between different safety factors are studied. In the integrated safety chain, the relation between crash avoidance, crash mitigation and injury protection are studied as an uninterrupted sequence to eliminate serious injury and fatality. The safety integration also cover the human, the infrastructure and the vehicle. More recently, the role and effects of automated road transport is included in the safe system approach, as this is an integration beyond earlier safety strategies. The safety of unprotected road users and new types of vehicles is also included in the safe system group activities.
The research results are used to optimize automatic safety systems in cars, to identify effective combinations of security measures and to direct traffic safety measures against areas where injuries and accidents cause the greatest problems.
