Enzyme engineering for novel bio-based microbial cell factory: first steps to green production of adipic acid

The research project aims at generating novel biochemical pathways for the biosynthesis of 6-aminohex-2-enoic acid (6-AHEA), a precursor for the biosynthesis of adipic acid and other organic molecules, used as building blocks in the plastic polymer industry. In particular, protein engineering techniques will be coupled to computational structural biology state-of the-art methodologies that will assist the design of novel enzyme variants. The novel enzymatic activities generated will be implemented in a microbial cell factory that will be of primary importance for the development of a bio-based production process of adipic acid.
