Our research focuses on the inflammatory process and the most important white blood cells of innate immunity, the neutrophils. Using a basic scientific approach, the interaction between neutrophil sugar structures and galectins, sugar-binding proteins with potentially immunoregulatory functions, is investigated. Translational studies of blood cells from children with autoinflammatory diseases and adults with sepsis then transfer hypotheses and questions to the clinical reality with the aim of better understanding the role of neutrophils and galectins in the inflammatory process. The long-term purpose is to be able to influence, at the molecular level, the inflammatory process in the chronically or acutely ill persons.
