Public Engagement discussion

On Friday morning, there will be 1.5 hours dedicated session focused on public engagement in astronomy in Sweden. This will consist of three presentations by Cissi Askwall, Robert Cumming and Cecilia Kozma followed by a panel-led discussion.
The discussion will revolve around questions such as:
  • For what reasons do astronomers care about public engagement?
  • What kind of engagement activities are best, and why?
  • Which audiences are being targeted by astronomy public engagement, and which are being missed?
  • How can we best engage with the media?
  • How is public outreach work funded?
  • What role does outreach work have in the careers of astronomers?
  • What do astronomers and the public think about the need for dark and quiet skies?
In addition to the morning session, there will be a workshop in the afternoon on Friday for those who work directly with, or are interested in, public engagement from different perspectives. The workshop will run in parallel to the scientific talks between 14:00 and 18:00 and will be limited to at most 30 people. The idea is to provide the opportunity to exchange experiences and ideas. Some of the topics to be discussed are:

  • ADON
  • Sweden Solar System
  • Dark skies and the public
  • How to efficiently reach out to a broad and wide public through common channels?
  • Populär Astronomi - can it be improved?
  • The role of Svenska Astronomiska Sällskapet
