Motor cell D can accept various multi-cylinder light duty (personal-car size) engines. Instrumentation is available for precise fuel and emissions measurements, in addition to conventional thermodynamic analysis via cylinder pressure measurement.
The activity in this cell has been somewhat more applied as it has strong connection to Volvo Car. Somewhat more near-term techniques that promise to improve gasoline engine efficiency and reduce emissions are evaluated here.
Various combustion modes are compared thermodynamically, in addition to normal measurements of fuel consumption, engine performance and emissions. The impact of new combustion modes on the exhaust gas catalyst is also evaluated.
