ISEAWIND – Innovative Structural Engineering Approaches for design of off-shore WIND power plant foundations

The expected development of offshore wind energy production in Sweden calls for new technical knowledge in the construction industry. Building support structures for offshore wind turbines involves several construction and design challenges. One of these challenges is that these structures are subjected to a combination of various stochastic loads, e.g. from wind, waves, current and ice.

The aim of this project is to study the dynamic effects of this complex loading situation and to develop the methods used for their design taking into account the structural behaviour of the whole wind turbine structure. The project is composed of four studies:

  1. Study of the engineering aspects of offshore wind turbine support structures in Sweden
  2. Study of load transfer from the tower to the ground and stress distribution in the support structure
  3. Study of specific details that are prone to fatigue (identified in 2)
  4. Study of the potential of processing large quantities of measured data for assessing the structural health of support structures
