The research within the SOFT Microscopy Center gathers several research groups from different departments at Chalmers and SIK. This is just examples at the moment!
Conducts research within the field of materials science and electron microscopy. High resolution analytical electron microscopy is used to correlate micro- and nanostructures to material properties.
Operates at the crossroads between optics and nanoscience, and with a particular emphasis on life science applications.
With the objective to assess relations between structure, processing behaviour and end-use properties of polymers and polymer composites, the main research areas in a broad sense of the research group are rheology (solids and fluids), polymer processing and physical performance. All activities are based on, or have a strong coupling to, polymer physics, which thus forms the point of departure.
Present projects where TEM/ultramicrotome are valuable include:
- nanocarbon filled polymer fibres and films
- structural characterisation of gels and films formed from polymers from renewable resources, such as cellulose, starch and proteins
The Surface and Microstructure Engineering Group at the Department of Materials and Manufacturing Technology conducts research on the processing-structure-property relationship in mainly metallic and ceramic materials and runs a well equipped materials characterization laboratory (SEM, TEM, XRD, AES, XPS, DSC, etc). For TEM analysis, a special specimen heating-holder is available which allows performing in-situ annealing experiments (up to 1000°C) and direct monitoring of possible microstructural changes. The Zeiss 912 Omega TEM is especially suited for soft materials. Investigated materials include
• all kinds of nanomaterials (nanofibres and powders, nanocomposite, thin films, and nanocrystalline bulk material),
• functional materials like corrosion- and wear resistant coatings, etc,
• structural materials like superalloys and advanced steels
• and polymer composites.
The Surface and Microstructure Engineering Group has also a strong base in processing tailored materials for products with novel/important applications (powder metallurgy, ceramic-based nanocomposite, etc.). Moreover, within the scope of the Metal Cutting Research and Development Centre (MCR), research is performed with respect to production technology and the optimization of manufacturing processes.
An interdisciplinary group consisting of both biologists and physicists. The research activities relate mainly to the fields of Metabolic Engineering and Molecular Microscopy.
The research is broad in scope and includes both “dry” and “wet” surface chemistry. Important areas are for example nanomaterials. biopolymer gels, organic capsules and assemblies of amphiphiles in solution and at surfaces.
Structure and Material Design at SIK design and characterize structures with unique properties. We make succulent foods with a tasty texture, future sustainable packaging materials, microbially smart surfaces, release systems, in-line monitoring and healthy food.
