Inferring the causality network inside the brain for the development of Alzheimer's disease:
statistical inference approach

Speaker: Hamed Farhadi

In this talk, Hamed Farhadi will present recent results on inferring the pathways of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) propagation inside the brain. In this study, they intended to infer the causality network for the hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease (A-beta and Tau) inside the brain using clinical data obtained from positron emission tomography (PET) of elderly patients at Massachusset General Hospital (MGH). First, Hamed will briefly present the background of this study.  Next, he will give an overview of the nonlinear causality inference test that he has developed for this study. Finally, he will present the results that reveal causality relationships in certain brain regions that can be affected by AD. This project is carried out in John Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) at Harvard in collaboration with MGH and Harvard Medical School.

Hamed Farhadi is a Researcher at Ericsson Research, Stockholm, Sweden, and a Research Fellow at Harvard University, Cambridge, USA. He received his PhD degree from KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden in 2014. He was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Harvard in 2016 and a Postdoctoral Researcher at Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden from 2015 to 2017. His research interests mainly lie in statistical signal processing and machine learning for a broad range of applications including wireless healthcare systems, micro-robotic surgery, clinical data analysis, and wireless information networks. He has been the recipient of several academic awards including ICASSP 2014 best student paper award. Dr. Farhadi is an Associate Editor of the Springer International Journal of Wireless Information Networks.

If you register before 13:00 pm on May 2, you will be served a light lunch after the seminar (12:30).
