We study fundamentals and provide engineering solutions to the Life Science sector, including health care, the food industry, and the biotech industry. Our work contributes to the development of a sustainable society, where biotechnology is used for sustainable production of fuels, chemicals and materials. Our researchers are also actively involved in advancing nutrition as well as disease diagnosis and treatment to help society move from treatment to prevention of many diseases.
Vision
Our vision is to further strengthen Chalmers as an internationally leading university within Life Science Engineering when it comes to fundamental and applied research, education, and innovation. Our research efforts are directed towards basic understanding of biological systems as well as applications in health care, the food industry, and the biotech industry. We continuously work towards establishing a sustainable society at the societal, ecological, and economical levels.
Interdisciplinary research between Life Science and other Areas of Advance
We interact closely with most of the other Areas of Advance at Chalmers. Our closest interactions are through our research on sustainable bioenergy, biomaterials, signal processing and analysis, and nano-technologies for use in life sciences. We also have close interaction with computer science and serve as a bridge to mathematical sciences for a number of research projects.
A sustainable future
The Life Science Area of Advance is running several projects that actively contribute to ensuring a sustainable society. This is particularly manifested in projects that are developing novel processes for sustainable production of fuels and chemicals through microbial fermentation, as well as projects on novel foods and food ingredients that will contribute to the establishment of a more sustainable society. We also have large activities in medical technology that aim to improve the quality of healthcare delivered through earlier diagnosis, less invasive treatment options, and reductions in hospital stays and rehabilitation times, resulting in a better life for the patients as well as lower costs.
