Successful collaboration with industry

During the evaluation process of the strategic energy research programme Chalmers Energy Initiative we asked collaborating organisations for their reflections on past and future interaction and collaboration with Chalmers. Their opinions are important to us, not only for evaluation but also for developing and improving how we address the energy and environmental challenges of tomorrow.

The challenges of tomorrow calls for an enhanced interplay between all stakeholders in society. Industrial collaboration is a key activity to make sure that our research is relevant and applicable in industry. However, utilisation of the research results is also defined as knowledge build-up and transfer, and open innovation activities such as advice on policy issues to industry and society. Through the Energy Area of Advance we can further develop the dynamic, interdisciplinary collaborations that we believe are crucial. Strategic long-term agreements have during the last few years been settled with ABB, Eon, Göteborg Energi and Preem.

Below are some statements on how Chalmers accompany research with successful collaborations, strategic alliances and value for society and the business sector.

Statements from collaboration partners

“Eon believes that the energy industry is facing a challenging transformation where new and changing technology, consumer behaviours, business models and regulations will drive the development of a sustainable energy business. E. ON has a strong vision and wants to be at the front line driving the transformation. Cooperation with external knowledge organizations as Chalmers is considered as an important part in navigating towards the future of the energy industry.
Anders Olsson, Deputy CEO, Eon Sverige AB

“Göteborg Energi is an energy company with an outspoken ambition to work for long-term sustainable energy solutions in the society. Due to this ambition, Göteborg Energi has a close collaboration with the academy to enable a highly innovative and flexible company, meeting an energy sector in transformation. Chalmers play an important role, helping Goteborg Energy understanding this transformation. Knowledge and information are key components in understanding this ongoing sectorial change.
Lotta Brändström, CEO, Göteborg Energi AB

Petter Holland, CEO, Preem AB

“ABB has supported Chalmers Energy Area of Advance since the start 2010. The energy research at Chalmers has shown a positive development since the start. The coordination among the different research areas has created synergies and increased the competence level within each research area. The strong focus on energy research was one of the reasons for ABB to form a strategic partnership with Chalmers in 2013.”
Mikael Dahlgren, Research Director, ABB Corporate Research Scandinavia

“Valmet Power and its predecessors have had extensive cooperation with Chalmers through the years. The most important energy related interactions since 2010 includes development of new processes for production of renewable vehicle fuels as well as enhance knowledge related to existing processes and products, aiming to improve the energy efficiency and environmental impact.”
Owe Asp, Vice President Service ENE BU/AMD, Valmet Power AB

“In the last years ABB has been involved as well as financed associate professors, PhD student, MSc degree projects, participated in Chalmers wind power center and been active in several steering committees. The knowledge and competence that was transferred through those collaboration have given our R&D valuable understanding that have been used to improve the competiveness of our products. We are currently investigating how we can further deepen and broaden our collaboration. This would not have happened without the initiative from Chalmers Energy Area of Advance.”
Mikael Dahlgren, Research Director, ABB Corporate Research Scandinavia

“A highly interesting example of successful cooperation is derived from the gasification research, where some of the tests enabled a creative cross fertilizing with district heating incineration development. Currently there are full scale tests being prepared at an E. ON incineration plant, with substantial performance increase potential expected, if the tests are successful. The serendipitous character should be noted as the really innovative achievements typically are discovered by chance and not as the result of a focused project. In order to increase the chances of innovative results it is important to achieve an attractive mix of theoretical competence and experience, but also practical hands on development capabilities, which is a strong reason for E. ON to cooperate with Chalmers.”
Anders Olsson, Deputy CEO, Eon Sverige AB

“Chalmers and Göteborg Energi has developed an indirect gasifier attached to the fluidised bed boiler at Chalmers. This comprised important knowledge to the decision, implementation and start up for Göteborg Energis big demonstration plant GoBiGas, where Chalmers has been highly involved. The following work will focus on continuously improving the demonstration plant. This is a step where Chalmers play a continued crucial role.”
Lotta Brändström, CEO, Göteborg Energi AB

“In the area of indirect gasification of biomass for production of synthetic natural gas, an extensive project has been conducted at the gasifier integrated to the 12MW research CFB boiler. In a joint project we have gained basic understanding of processes which is a valuable base now when taking the demonstration plant GoBiGas into operation. We continue the cooperation within Swedish Gasification Centre, where evaluation and optimization of the GoBiGas has high priority. Here, the basic knowledge from university researchers will be combined with industry scale operation experience, which gives unique possibilities for further development.”
Owe Asp, Vice President Service ENE BU/AMD, Valmet Power AB

“Since many years, Chalmers has continuously supported research in the field of Chemical Looping Combustion. They have built and operated several laboratory pilots amongst them a 10 kW and a 100 kW burning solid fuels that have supported several joint research projects with Alstom and other stakeholders. Chalmers have developed particular expertise in the analysis and selection of oxygen carriers, which are key features for this technology and in operation of chemical looping units with solid fuels such as coal and petcoke."
Nils Lannefors, Country President for Alstom in Sweden

“The results from the research projects have been of great importance to Preem AB in the process of developing a long-term strategy to obtain a sustainable position for Preem's refineries. The results and the improved understanding of the underlying complex chemical mechanisms have been of decisive importance during our development of a production unit for talloil based diesel for the Swedish market.”
Petter Holland, CEO, Preem AB

“From an Eon perspective the main benefits of the cooperation are derived from the actual results of the research and the opportunities to mix knowledge and experience from the industry with the academic perspective, enabling knowledge transfer and creative input to development processes as well as access to valuable knowledge networks.”
Anders Olsson, Deputy CEO, Eon Sverige AB

“Since 2010 the collaboration between Chalmers and Göteborg Energi has increased and has become more extensive through the Chalmers Energy Area of Advance.”
