Research and utilisation

Chalmers will use its research, collaboration and utilisation to be an international trailblazer on the road to climate adaptation works – with the campus area, the city and the region as its test beds. Chalmers will use its own and others’ research to reduce the carbon footprint caused by its own activities in line with national and international climate objectives – and be at the forefront in applying research findings in the process.

Chalmers’ positive climate impact in terms of research and utilisation is our biggest and most important contribution to climate adaptation works. It is impossible to estimate this indirect climate impact at the moment, but we plan to produce a methodology to be able to do so.

We have a significant role to play in the transition to a climate-neutral society. We undertake research on climate change, both on how it is to be countered and how we are to adapt in order to manage it. We develop solutions that can reduce emissions of greenhouse gases, take part in implementing those solutions and disseminate the knowledge and expertise we produce. This is our indirect positive contribution towards climate adaptation works.

Chalmers’ research findings contribute to climate adaptation works 

Society’s challenges and curiosity propel our research forward and Chalmers’ research findings and their utilisation make a clear contribution to the transition to climate adaptation works. Chalmers’ activities include both research that is directly related to climate issues and research that creates the conditions needed for further research to promote climate-related issues and societal solutions. We prepare our doctoral students and researchers to be able to get involved and be active in climate adaptation works.

Examples from the action plan: Analysis of Chalmers’ initiatives for the utilisation of research findings that can have a direct climate impact in society, in order to create even more effective support by means of the innovations system, strategic partnerships, networks and communication. This analysis will lead to proposals for changes in priorities and focus within existing activities. Taking into account opportunities for doctoral students to develop skills to contribute to climate adaptation works when planning Chalmers’ doctoral programmes and graduate schools.​ Expansion of the opportunity for researchers to chart their research against Agenda 2030, and integration of Agenda 2030 into Chalmers Research.

The benefit from Chalmers’ research is passed on

We disseminate good examples and research findings that contribute to progress towards climate adaptation works focusing on research in areas such as energy, energy systems, energy storage, climate and sustainable production. The campus, the city and the region are our test beds and will constitute a shop window to the surrounding world where research findings are applied in practice. Chalmers will contribute to enabling existing national and international industry to become independent of fossil fuels and new sustainable companies to be created.

Examples from the action plan: Increased visibility of Chalmers’ research with focus on climate, and increased dissemination of good examples nationally and internationally. Using our campuses as test beds and extending those test beds to the city and the region. Clarifying the sustainability and climate issue in Chalmers’ relationships with partners and other external players. Progress towards climate adaptation works to be added to Vice Presidents’ remit.
