Guest lecture: Knowledge based design of lipase B from Candida antarctica

Speaker: Professor Karl Hult, School of Biotechnology, KTH, Stockholm Abstract:

Lipase B from Candida antarctica is active in many organic solvents. It has been used a lot in organic synthesis and is an important industrial catalyst. With different examples I will show how we designed the enzyme to change enantioselectivity and substrate selectivity. A more challenging task has been to approach catalytic promiscuity. By using parts of the catalytic machinery we have introduced new reactions catalyzed by a lipase, such as aldol condensation and Michael additions.
