Metabolism – The Foundation of Life

A symposium to celebrate the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation´s 100-year anniversary.
Metabolism – The Foundation of Life

Metabolism is essential for us as it deals with the uptake and transformation of nutrients to sustain life. There are three important aspects of metabolism – the chemical breakdown of energy-rich molecules to supply energy, the synthesis of building blocks to build cells and organisms, and the elimination of waste products. These processes are essential for life – where there is metabolism there is life and without metabolism there is no life.

With this in mind, it is not surprising that metabolic dysfunction is a common cause of disease. It plays an important role in “metabolic diseases” such as mitochondrial diseases, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. There is also increasing evidence that metabolic dysregulation contributes to diseases that perhaps are not directly thought of as “metabolic diseases” such as neurodegenerative conditions and diseases affecting the liver, lungs and kidneys.

We are not alone; we coexist with our microbiome and this relationship is important for metabolic regulation. Another interesting aspect of the metabolism is that metabolic pathways can be engineered to learn new tricks and help us produce valuable compounds such as fuels, chemicals and drugs.

This program is an attempt to cover some of the many interesting subjects within the field of metabolism. These topics have been selected to give glimpses of interesting areas that we think will be important in providing new information, new procedures, and new treatments for the good of everyone.

The symposium is free of charge but registration is mandatory.
